The DFE states that "The aim of teaching pupils about physical health and mental wellbeing is to give them the information that they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. It should enable them to recognise what is normal and what is an issue in themselves and others and, when issues arise, know how to seek support as early as possible from appropriate sources.
It is important for schools to promote pupils’ self-control and ability to self-regulate, and strategies for doing so. This will enable them to become confident in their ability to achieve well and persevere even when they encounter setbacks or when their goals are distant, and to respond calmly and rationally to setbacks and challenges. This integrated, whole-school approach to the teaching and promotion of health and wellbeing has a potential positive impact on behaviour and attainment."
We whole heartedly agree with this which is why I have teamed up with Gemma from Giving Emotions a Meaning to help provide a whole school approach to mental health sessions. Have a look below to see what we can do for you.
Love, Lisa and Gemma x
Lisa delivers a 3 hour CPD accredited session that can be with staff or parents and is focused on overwhelming thoughts (whether that be from anxiety, stress or panic attacks), how they affect our brains and bodies and what we can do to calm our brains down as well as reduce those overwhelming thoughts and physical feelings. The result is that staff and parents feel better equipped to deal with their stressors and anxieties as well as understanding what is happening to them so it’s not as concerning when they have chest pains, breathlessness, dizziness etc. It’s all delivered in a practical way with examples that encompass the good, the bad, the ugly and the downright funny experiences that Lisa has gone through on her own journey. From navigating bereavement and moving across the country to fighting panic attacks during her time as a Chief Operating officer for a multi academy trust.
While Lisa works with the adults, the fabulous Gemma works with groups of children in shorter sessions (totalling three hours), supporting them to explore their emotions, whilst engaging them in creative activities that are tailored to their needs. Gemma is a qualified teacher with over 10 years experience in Early Years/ Primary education and 5 years experience of being a Family Learning Coordinator, everything she does is centred around children and supporting their emotional development. Following her sessions, the children will be able to have an understanding of emotions as well as recognising different emotions. The sessions help to enhance their vocabulary related to emotions and feelings resulting in greater confidence and communication as well as creating positive and tangible tools to use in aiding their emotional development.
In both the sessions, we make sure there is a crossover in the techniques we deliver. This means that both staff and children have the knowledge and understanding to implement them together.
If you work for a SEND setting, please note that we can adapt our offering to make sure it really helps your students. We're keen to make sure everyone is included.
As above, Lisa delivers a CPD accredited session that can be with older pupils, staff or parents and is focused on overwhelming thoughts (whether that be from anxiety, stress or panic attacks), how they affect our brains and bodies and what we can do to calm our brains down as well as reduce those overwhelming thoughts and physical feelings. The result of this three hour session is that the participants feel better equipped to deal with their stressors and anxieties as well as understanding what is happening to them so it’s not as concerning when they have chest pains, breathlessness, dizziness etc. It’s all delivered in a practical way with examples that encompass the good, the bad, the ugly and the downright funny experiences that Lisa has gone through on her own journey. From navigating bereavement and moving across the country to fighting panic attacks during her time as a Chief Operating officer for a multi academy trust.
